Lifesavers set to assist Syrian refugees

A team of Kiwi surf lifesavers will shortly set off to assist with the Syrian refugee crisis.

The Bethells Beach team will travel to Lesbos in a couple of weeks, and they've already received advice from someone who's already been.

Australian lifeguard Simon Lewis received worldwide praise from some and death threats from others for his efforts helping refugees.

"They're not terrorists; they're not crazy people, and they're human beings."

And Mr Lewis was there in the thick of it.

"I'm a lifeguard and I've got this unique set of skills that I learned through my training like every other lifeguard."

His efforts became front-page news across the world, inspiring the lifeguard team from Bethells Beach.

"If there's the possibility we can save any number of people -- kiddies mums, dads, whatever the case is -- that has to make a difference doesn't it?" says Dave Comp, from Bethells Beach Surf Life Saving.

In a couple of weeks, it'll be their turn, dealing with refugees facing an increasingly hostile reception.

"It may manifest and may change with different agreements but they're still going to be determined, they're still going to put themselves in danger and they're still going to need help," says Mr Lewis.

Simon has been in New Zealand warning them what to expect.

"The New Zealand lifeguards are going to deal with playing this cat-and-mouse game, responding in one section and then finding out they're coming from another section, so they're going to constantly be one edge," says Mr Lewis.

In the 10 days Mr Lewis was on Lesbos, he saved many lives and saw many others lost.

"You've got seven spots for children, or four spots for adults, and the harshness is that seven children are worth more than four adults, but you make that call on the ground."

He knows that horrors await them, but he also knows it's worth it.

"The confidence of making a difference to the biggest humanitarian crisis in the world will allow them to be good leaders, be good teachers, and will allow them to inspire young kids," says Mr Lewis.
