Police are calling for help from students who may have seen an attempted abduction of a 15-year-old girl in the Auckland suburb of Onehunga last month.

The girl was waiting for her mother to pick her up from a bus stop on Beachcroft Ave about 4pm on July 26, when a man tried to force her into his car.

She told police she didn't know the man, who attempted to coax her into his vehicle by saying that her mother had sent him to pick her up.

When she refused, the man allegedly got out of his car and grabbed her by the arm, before a group of teenage boys ran towards the bus stop, causing him to get back in his car and race away in the direction of Pleasant St.

Detective Sergeant David Paea believes the boys may have scared the man off, and would like to speak to them.

"They were aged around 15, and enquiries to locate the teenage witnesses has been unsuccessful," he explained.

"We've been following various lines of enquiry since the incident, but the offender hasn't yet been identified or located."

Police say the offender has been described as a male around the age of 40, with an average build.

He was driving a white, four-door sedan and wearing a dark suit at the time of the attempted kidnapping.

Police are urging anyone with information to contact Glen Innes CIB on (09) 524 1921 or to anonymously call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
