A 25-year-old man has been charged with murder following the death of a man at a residential house in Kawerau.
Police say Barry Junior Hunt, 31, suffered a head injury caused by an axe during an altercation between a group of men around 7:30pm last night.
He was taken to Whakatane Hospital in a critical condition and died early this morning.
A homicide inquiry has been launched and the accused will appear at the Whakatane District Court today.
