It's been a deadly weekend on roads in Auckland, Northland and the Central Plateau, with four people killed in separate accidents.

In the most recent, police have been called out to the scene of a fatal accident near Springs Hill in Waiouru.

One person has died in the incident, which saw a car crash on State Highway 1 at 5:45am on Sunday.

The road will be reduced to just one lane as the Serious Crash Unit commences its investigation.

Police say both lanes will be open again after "a short time".

In the first incident of the night, a vehicle plummeted into a creek in Omanaia, Northland, resulting in the death of one man.

The accident occurred just before 10pm on Saturday night.

Two people were in the car as it crashed into the water, but just one was able to escape, swimming to safety with just minor injuries.

The other person became trapped inside the vehicle and died.

Police say the Serious Crash Unit are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Also in Northland, one person was killed and another is in a critical condition after a car drove off the road on State Highway 1 in Towai just after midnight.

The car hit a tree while travelling at speed, killing a passenger, with the driver now receiving treatment at Kawakawa Hospital.

Police have offered their sympathies to friends and family of the victims involved in both incidents.

In a third crash, at 1:15am, a motorcyclist died after crashing into the back of a parked car in the Auckland suburb of Royal Oak.

Police confirmed the rider had been involved in an earlier pursuit, and after failing to take a roundabout, hit a car and died at the scene.

Earlier, at around 6pm on Saturday, three people were involved in a head-on collision on State Highway 2 at Apata near Tauranga.

Two have been taken to hospital in a serious condition and one has moderate injuries after a car crossed the centreline.
