A public health alert has been issued after two confirmed cases of meningococcal disease at a Fijian Seventh-Day Adventist Church in south Auckland.

Anyone who visited the Otahuhu church between Saturday 27 August to Monday 05 September may have been affected and should look out for symptoms, says the Auckland Regional Public Health service.

Medical officer of health, Dr Shanika Perera says: "At this stage in our investigation we are unsure if the two cases are linked."

One of those diagnosed remains in hospital while the other has been discharged.

Meningococcal disease is spread in a similar way to the common cold - through close personal contact, and by coughing and sneezing.

Symptoms may include; fever, confusion, sleepiness, dislike of bright lights, stiff neck, joint pain and the appearance of a rash. Children and babies may also refuse feeds, can be floppy and experience vomiting.

If you suspect you or someone you know might have meningococcal disease call your doctor or Healthline (0800 611 116) immediately.
