A microlight aircraft pilot has walked away from a crash near Motueka with minor injuries this afternoon.

Police say the incident, believed to be caused by engine trouble, happened around 12:40pm when the aircraft crashed into a kiwifruit orchard near Motueka Airport.

Senior Sergeant Stu Koeofed says the 63-year-old man was the only one inside the microlight and was trying to glide back to the airport after experiencing problems with the engine.

However, it landed short and into the orchard. It is unknown how much damage, if any, was done to the orchard.

The crash has been reported to the Civil Aviation Authority
