Morrinsville farmer caught in sow row

A farmer southwest of Morrinsville says locals who are angry at his plans to build the country's largest pig farm just do not understand the animal.

McIntyre Piggery in Kereone has applied for resource consent to house up to 5000 sows, and build a biogas plant which could power up to 1800 homes.

But a meeting this week attracted around 70 concerned neighbours who believe the farm will be too big and smelly and will cause traffic problems.

Ken McIntyre says he has dealt with all of those worries in his application, and says he is getting a hard time because Kiwi's are not used to the idea of 'pig-gas'.
