Police have praised "quick-thinking" campers who helped two women burned in a gas cylinder explosion into a nearby lake.

The women, Swiss nationals in their 60s, are both still at Dunedin Hospital -- one in the emergency department with serious burns, the other in a moderate condition.

The windows of their campervan were blown out and the sides spilt after its gas cylinder blew up, just after 7pm on Monday at Lake Hayes Motor Home Reserve, near Arrowtown.

The women, who were cooking dinner, received burns to their faces and arms. The campervan itself didn't catch fire.

Other campers came to the women's aid, dousing them with water before deciding to help them into neighbouring Lake Hayes.

"Their hair was very badly singed and their skin was very red," a witness told Fairfax Media.

The pair stayed in the lake until an ambulance arrived.
