The two climbers whose bodies were recovered from Mt Silberhorn have been identified.
They were Stuart Jason Hollaway, 42 and his partner Dale Amanda Thistlethwaite, 35, both from Melbourne.
Mr Hollaway was a highly respected and experienced mountain guide, police say, and Ms Thistlethwaite was a very experienced climber.
They had been travelling and climbing New Zealand since early December.
Enquiries indicated the pair fell from near the top of the mountain on December 29, says Inspector Dave Gaskin from Mid-South Canterbury police.
The deaths will be referred to the coroner.
