A Christchurch high school student could be in deep trouble after running through two girls' schools wearing nothing but his underwear and a mask, with the slogan "Sieg heil" written on his chest.

The year 13 student from Christchurch Boys' High reportedly ran through Christchurch Girls' High and Rangi Ruru Girls' on Thursday afternoon as part of an end-of-year prank.

Christchurch Boys' High Headmaster Nic Hill says the student handed himself into the school first thing on Friday morning.

"The boy came to school this morning and the first thing he did was took himself to the senior master to hand himself in."

Mr Hill says he is concerned about the slogan's "racist nature."

"That does not fit with the inclusive values of the school."

The term "sieg heil" translates to "hail victory" in German, and was widely used by the Adolf Hitler-led Nazi Party in the 1930s and 1940s.

Christchurch Girls' High principal Pauline Duthie saw the prank unfold, but didn't see any offensive slogans at the time.

"I was there for their first run, then they came back for a second - there was nothing anyone noticed at the time."

Ms Duthie says end-of-year pranks happen often.

"It has happened in the past - at the end of the school year there is always pranks. We try and keep them safe and in good humour."

Mr Hill told Newshub he has spoken with the other schools involved and has apologised.

The student is expected to meet with the headmaster on Monday.
