Brittle bone disease campaigner Samuel Gibson has died in hospital, after suffering a head injury while competing in a Hawke's Bay half marathon.

The father-of-two is thought to have fallen forwards from his wheelchair when it stopped during the race. He was taken to the Hawke's Bay Fallen Soldiers' Memorial Hospital and put on life support.

He has been helping to raise money for Ryuki, a New Zealand child who suffers from the rare osteogenesis imperfecta bone disorder which is also called Brittle Bone Disease.

Osteogenesis imperfecta is an incurable genetic disorder which weakens bones. However Mr Gibson didn't let it stop him leading an active life. He had been training for the 300km Alps to Ocean Trail journey in the South Island later in the year.

UPDATE:

Police say they are now investigating Samuel Gibson's death on behalf of the coroner. They are not treating it as suspicious.
