Five people managed to escape a house fire in the Bay of Plenty at around 3:30am on Sunday.

One person was taken to Whakatane Hospital with moderate injuries, while four others were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.

A specialist fire investigator was sent to the Huia St home, and crews will remain at the scene until later Sunday morning.

A fire also broke out at a house in the Auckland suburb of New Windsor around 5:30am.

Fire service spokesman Jarron Phillips said the blaze was mostly confined to the basement of the two-storey home.

Everyone got out safely, and fire crews have left the scene.
