Outrage over paedophile bail

The 'Christie's Law' lobby group feels its push for tougher bail laws is falling on deaf ears following two high-profile bail decisions yesterday.

In Christchurch, a convicted paedophile was given bail after appearing in court accused of abusing dozens of young boys, and in Northland, a man accused of sex crimes against children was bailed to an Auckland address despite police opposition.

Ruth Money, the chairperson of Christie's Law - which was formed after the murder of teenager Christie Marceau - can't understand why police concerns aren't given more weight.

"We're absolutely outraged that people don't seem to be learning a lesson," she says. "Whether it is a serious crime, or whether it actually results in a tragic death as in the Christie Marceau case and many before her, the judiciary just don't seem to be listening to police."

The group is calling for stricter sanctions on judges.
