Overnight crashes see roads closed

It's been a horror night on the roads, with four people dying in three separate crashes.

Two died in a crash on State Highway 2 at Mangatawhiri in Waikato.

A third was killed in a single-car crash on the Napier-Taupo road at 11:35pm. Four people were in the car. The road reopened around 3:15am, and the serious crash unit is investigating.

Another died after their vehicle went down a bank in Raupunga, near Wairoa, at 3:30am. Another person in the car escaped unharmed. SH2 was briefly closed, and has now been cleared.

In Tauranga, a crash closed Oropi Rd to Poike Rd in both directions.

And a man was trapped in his car in the Auckland suburb of Takanini this morning after hitting a power pole, bringing down the lines.

Vector cut power to the area to allow the man to get out of his car, and Porchester R was closed for around an hour.
