Patu - the new fitness craze

In the quiet, isolated village of Tuai in Waikaremoana, the grannies are teaching their young ones how Patu fitness is done.

Every Tuesday, in the community hall, the 'Lakie' Nannies drop what they're doing, put on their boxing gloves and punch their way to good health.

Patu is the latest fitness craze hitting small towns around Aotearoa, mixing box fit, circuit training, tikanga and Te Reo Māori.

"It helps me to breathe better," says Rose Lackner, one of Patu's most staunchest participants who is in her 70s.

The lives of the Lakies are based around the marae and everything that happens at their.  So it's the nannies who man every single event, whether it be a tangi or a meeting. Patu is a chance for the nannies to escape and look after themselves when their norm is to look after everyone else.

Tina Wagner humorously told The Hui  the Patu initiative is beneficial to Tuhoe because with a decrease in obesity, the iwi spends less money on material for uniforms.
