One person is in a critical condition after a truck and car collided on State Highway 1 south of Rakaia in Canterbury.
Police were called to the scene just before 5:30am on Friday, and the injured person will be airlifted to Christchurch Hospital.
The serious crash unit is on the scene, and the road is expected to remain closed for some time.
Motorists are advised to avoid the road, and diversions are in place.
