Person killed by train near Ashburton

A person's been killed being hit by a train south of Ashburton.

The freight train was heading south when it struck the person on Archibald St in Tinwald on State Highway 1.

The rail line is closed until track clearance is given and a spokesperson for KiwiRail says the train driver will be relieved of their duties and offered counselling.

"Our thoughts are with the family of the person involved, any witnesses, our staff and emergency services because these events always have a significant effect on many people."

Earlier this year a well-known orchestra player was killed by a train in Christchurch and another man was killed in the suburb of Belfast by a train in April.

There are around 1320 public road level crossings and 122 stand-alone public pedestrian level crossings on the KiwiRail rail network in New Zealand. Over 20 percent are protected by half-arm barriers, flashing lights and bells. Forty-seven percent are protected by just passive signs.
