Pizza takes a slice out of fine dining

The date night could be going out of fashion, with Kiwis increasingly opting to stay in and order pizza.

A Canstar Blue survey has found one in four New Zealanders would rather slouch on the couch than venture out for a meal.

But some Kiwis still dream of the romantic night out.

"Going out is more special, and you get to see other people," one fan of going out told 3 News. "Pizza just makes me feel a bit lazy. But pizza's good."

"Ordering a pizza delivered to you costs what, $30 bucks?" said another. "Going out for a meal costs around about the same."

A quarter of respondents said quality doesn't matter when it comes to pizza – they were more interested in it being a cheap feed – especially Generation Y, who are also the most likely to have an app on their phone for ordering pizza and to top up their meal with garlic bread and desserts.

Aucklanders are the most likely to choose a low-calorie pizza – if such a thing exists – and Otago residents the most likely to try new flavours.

Asked to rate pizza chains on value, service, deals, delivery speed, variety and taste, Hell Pizza came out on top.
