Details of the police case against two men accused of burning another man to death were made public today.

Twenty-one-year-old Shalvin Prasad was found dead in south Auckland earlier this year after being set on fire.

Police believe Mr Prasad was alive when he was set on fire. His body was found on a rural road in Kingseat, south Auckland, on January 31.

Bryne Permal and Shivneel Kumar have both been charged with his murder.

Permal and Kumar appeared by video link at court today where more details of the case were released. According to the police summary of facts, Mr Prasad's family became concerned when he didn't come home. His father checked his bank account and noticed $30,000 had been withdrawn. He then called police.

Earlier in the day, police allege Kumar and Prasad drove separately to the Ronwood Ave ASB in Manukau, where Mr Prasad withdrew the $30,000. While inside, he texted Kumar. The two stayed in contact throughout the day.

Police say at 10:33pm the two accused went to the Papakura Mobil station in Permal's car, where they filled two cans of petrol.

They then continued on to McRobbie's Rd in Kingseat, where police say the two accused poured petrol over Mr Prasad and set him alight.

At 4:12am, Mr Prasad's phone had a factory data reset performed on it, erasing data and resetting it to the default settings. By 6:34am police had found the badly burnt body in Kingseat.

At 10:20am Kumar approached a man at Caltex in Manukau and gave him Mr Prasad's cell phone handset with the SIM card already removed.

On February 1, fingerprints were taken from the remains and identified as Mr Prasad's. On February 3 police found Mr Prasad's car outside Permal's job at Frucor on Plunket Ave, Manukau.

Police have said in the following days, tens of thousands of dollars were spent. The two men remain in custody and are due to appear in the High Court next month.
