Police have recovered a patrol vehicle that was stolen while an officer conducted a traffic stop in Whangamata overnight.
A vehicle had been stopped for speeding, when a passenger took off in the officer's car.
The vehicle was found around 3am in Opoutere with the firearms still securely stowed away.
Investigations to locate the offender are underway.
