Police say they fear for the safety of Kawhia man Trevor Smith, who hasn't been seen for ten days.

The 70-year-old was last spotted by family members on Sunday March 16. Now, police are appealing for the public's help.

Mr Smith suffers from dementia and diabetes and on Tuesday police said they feared he may be disorientated.

He needs insulin daily to treat his diabetes and he may be in distress because he had not had his medication.

Said by family to lead a very active lifestyle, Mr Smith volunteers as a caregiver at Waikato Hospital and fishes regularly.

On Saturday the Hamilton Search and Rescue Squad deployed several staff and a large number of volunteers to search Hamilton.

The banks of the Waikato River were searched using a police boat and an aerial search was conducted to scour farm land south of the city.

"All avenues of inquiry have been exhausted to date in attempts to find Trevor, including the use of search dogs, helicopters and boats," says Hamilton CIB Detective Senior Sergeant Ross Patterson.

"Trevor's friends and family have searched and delivered pamphlets to the residents of Hamilton city and they've spoken to a huge amount of people to find where their loved one is."

Mr Smith was reported missing wearing a grey cap, dark blue trackpants, white shoes and a distinctive lime-green Warriors league jersey.
