Police have unveiled their latest campaign to recruit more women into the force.
It is based on a true story of how a female constable helped a young woman who was the victim of cyber-bullying by an ex boyfriend.
When Constable Penni Eggleton told her colleagues about the nasty text message attack on the young woman, it resonated. So much so, that the police are now using the story to illustrate why it is important to have women in blue.
“She was really afraid, she knew a bit about his past,” Ms Eggleton explains.
“My worries for her were more extreme than her own.”
The mural campaign installed at Massey University’s Wellington campus is graphic and to the point.
It shows some of the text messages received by the woman – more than 100 in just two days.
The texts vary in emotion, from ‘I can change babe’ to ‘you can’t hide from me’ and ‘I’ll burn your house down’.
“We can stop the behaviour, we can manage the risk,” Ms Eggleton says.
The Families Commission is right behind the new campaign, which coincides with white ribbon month, promoting an anti-domestic violence message.
Ms Eggleton now works for the Welington family violence team and the man who sent the texts which sparked the campaign was arrested.
