Proposed liquor ban near Auckland schools

A proposed change to Auckland liquor laws would mean bottle shops and supermarkets near schools would have to stop selling alcohol for one hour a day.

A panel made up of four council members and a member of an independent Maori statutory body has been evaluating new alcohol policy submission. It has suggested forcing alcohol outlets near primary and secondary schools to close between 3pm and 4pm each day.

The panel has yet to specify how far away a liquor outlet must be from a school to avoid closing.

Other recommendations made by the panel include changing the opening hours of liquor stores from the current 7am to 11pm hours, to 9am to 9pm.

It is also suggesting changing the closing time of bars and nightclubs in central Auckland from 4am to 3am.

There are also plans to freeze granting new licences in 23 areas of the region.

The recommendations will be considered by the council in May.

The public will then be able to appeal the proposed Alcohol Regulatory and Licensing Authority changes for 30 days.
