The Labour Party wants more information about an apparent non-accidental death at Auckland's Mt Eden Prison.

A prisoner who was believed to be in solitary confinement died on Monday, despite medical treatment from emergency staff.

Labour's Corrections spokesperson, Kelvin Davis, is now searching for answers including what monitoring the prisoner was subjected to:

"It would take a bit of preparation, I'm guessing, and questions need to be asked of them how do these things happen," says Mr Davis.

"If somebody is separated and is apparently meant to be monitored, how do they get the opportunity to do these sorts of things?"

The death has been referred to the coroner.
