It is almost four years since the Rena container ship ran aground off the Tauranga coast, and a recovery plan has finally been completed.

The $2.4-million project saw iwi and Government agencies work together to try and restore the environment to its pre-Rena state.

But recovery manager Bruce Fraser says salvage work is ongoing, and an upcoming hearing will decide if parts of the wreck can remain on the reef:

"All that continues, and also there's still monitoring work from various scientific agencies going on just to see what kind of long-term impact it might have on the environment."

Mr Fraser says a legacy of knowledge has been gathered through the recovery plan.

There have been no reports of oil washing ashore because of the Rena since March last year, and bird populations are now stable or increasing.

A hearing on the future of the wreck will take place in about a month's time.
