A man shot by police in Rotorua earlier this month has died.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident, which happened on July 14.

Police have also named him as 35-year-old Shargin Stephens. They say their thoughts are with his family at this time.

Witnesses say Mr Stephens was holding a machete and doing a haka in the middle of the road before he was shot.

In video recorded by two men driving in a car close to the scene shots and sirens can be heard.

As police continue to investigate, they say they would like to talk to the two men who took the video, to get a more detailed picture of what happened.

They would also like to talk to anyone who was in the area of Vaughan, Marino and Te Ngae Roads on July 14.

Police said he had been pepper-sprayed and Tasered three times without effect after attacking a police car. He was believed to be under the influence of methamphetamine.

Police staff provided first aid at the scene until ambulance staff arrived and took him to Rotorua Hospital. He was then flown to Waikato Hospital in critical condition, but later died.

A post mortem is due to be held today.
