A school bus full of children has veered off the road and over a bank north of Levin, resulting in a number of injuries.

The crash left the driver needing medical treatment, and he has since been taken to hospital.

Police say the bus travelled over the bank on Waikawa Beach Rd in Manakau with 12 children on board.

All the children have been taken off the bus and assessed by medical staff, and police say all the kids hurt in the incident have just minor injuries.

The fire service said it got a call just after 3pm notifying it of the incident. A number of parents were told the news and came to the scene to pick their children up.

Traffic control is now in place on Waikawa Beach Rd, and a tow truck is en route to remove the bus from the ditch.
