Serious crash south of Mangaweka

The Easter road toll has risen to four, with a fatal North Island crash.

Firefighters had to cut people free from the two vehicles on State Highway 1, just south of Mangaweka, at around 1pm this afternoon.

One died at the scene and another has been flown to Palmerston North Hospital in a serious condition. Another victim has been taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Police inspector Ross Grantham says people travelling between between Bulls and Taihape can expect big delays while the wreckage is cleared. Helen Kelly, owner of the highway coffee shop at Mangaweka, says traffic is at a standstill north, and crawling south.

Last year one person died during the holiday period.
