The East Cape has been jolted by a series of earthquakes overnight, including one that registered magnitude 5.7.

It was described by GNS as severe, and felt as far away as Wellington.

It struck at about 3:20am on Tuesday, 21 kilometres deep and 95 kilometres northeast of the Te Araroa coast.

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck off the east coast of the North Island at 4:37am on Friday, generating a 30cm tsunami, and a 6.2 shake followed soon after.
