A working replica of Britain's Globe Theatre will soon be built in Auckland, with two of William Shakespeare's plays to be performed.

The Pop-up Globe will mark the 400th anniversary of the death of the famous wordsmith and be located in Auckland's Aotea Square for a limited time.

"Our aim is to recreate as faithfully as possible this original performance space so Pop-up Globe's audience can enjoy the remarkable experience of Shakespeare's own audience 400 years ago," says the theatre's artistic director Dr Miles Gregory.

The plays Romeo & Juliet and Twelfth Night will be performed from February 19th and 20th respectively until the end of March, with daytime and evening sessions taking place.

The pop-up theatre will be constructed near the Town Hall, directly behind the Q Theatre, at 38 Greys Avenue. Its dimensions will be exactly the same as Shakespeare's second Globe Theatre, which was built on the ruins of the first Globe Theatre in 1614.

"Initiated and launched here in Auckland, Pop-up Globe is a chance for Kiwis to have a remarkable Shakespearian theatrical experience driven by a remarkable Kiwi bringing his skills and experiences back home, and a wonderful complement to the Auckland Arts Festival," says Auckland Mayor Len Brown.

The theatre will have a 100-square-metre stage and be able to fit 900 people.
