Two passengers on board a light plane coming into Auckland last night had a lucky escape when their plane was forced to land on its belly.
The Piper Chieftan took off from Great Barrier Island bound for Ardmore when the pilot noticed a problem with the landing gear.
Emergency services were put on standby and the plane was diverted to Whenuapai Airbase where it was forced to land on its belly, amidst a flurry of sparks.
No one on board was injured.
