Special Chunuk Bair service emotional tribute

A special service for New Zealanders has been held at Chunuk Bair, above Anzac Cove in Gallipoli.

Prime Minister John Key joined Prince Charles and Prince Harry to remember the New Zealand soldiers who battled for two days to hold the summit.

Two-thousand New Zealanders, wanting to pay their respects at the point where in 1915 hundreds lost their lives over two days, trekked for 6.5km up a hilly ridge to be there.

Mr Key said soldiers on both sides fought with great honour.

"We do not come here merely as sightseers," Mr Key said. "We come here to feel closer to those who came before us 100 years ago."

They also thank the Turkish for the welcome they have given New Zealanders since the 1930s.

"That has paved the way for us to commemorate here on their land, our losses and this big defeat," Labour leader Andrew Little says. "It is a model for the rest of the world, frankly."

Syd Hunter lost an uncle at Gallipoli and found this to be an emotional week.

"[He was] twenty-two, killed the second day," says Mr Hunter. "The family were devastated. My grandmother never recovered."

The service was also an opportunity to remember New Zealanders killed in other conflicts – gone, but never to be forgotten.
