Student flat trashed in break-in

University of Otago students have been left shaken after claiming their student flat was trashed on Tuesday morning.

A Hyde St student says a flatmate arrived home in the early hours of the morning to find four unknown young women revelling in overturned furniture, smashed lightbulbs and rubbish strewn around the living room.

The women laughed and said, "You should lock your door", before running away, he says.

The flatmate pursued them on foot and later searched the area with police, but were unable to find them.

Hyde St has become infamous for the last few years due to its annual keg party. The student says that while there had always been a culture that "might not be to the taste of most people in New Zealand", it had recently taken a nasty turn.

He says there have been "multiple instances of aggression and intimidation" since the beginning of the student year.

University of Otago spokeswoman Megan McPherson says the university is liaising with Hyde St tenants and the police to reach a solution.
