An Auckland couple got a surprise last night when their trip to a Subway restaurant for dinner turned into a rescue mission.

It's home to the foot-long, but Rezi Singh didn't expect her own two feet would come in handy when she heard cries for help coming from a door behind the counter.

"Somebody was shouting inside, she was crying, she said she was locked there for the last two hours," said Ms Singh.

It emerged the distress call was coming from a staff member who'd accidentally locked herself in a storeroom.

Ms Singh leapt into action, scaling the front counter to open the door where the worker had been stuck for nearly two hours.

In video of the incident recorded by Ms Singh's husband Amandeep, the employee emerges crying and exclaims: "Thank you so much, I was so scared!"

She had gone out the back preparing to close the shop and accidentally locked herself in.

It's not known if any other customers came in while she was stuck, but Newshub understands nothing was taken from the store during the ordeal.

"We even offered to drop her home, because she was not in the state of mind to go. We were electing to push ourselves to help more," says Ms Singh.

Subway wouldn't comment on camera, but says it's great a customer was able to help and that the affected staff member is OK and will be returning to work in a couple of days.
