Aerial video reveals warzone like roads near Kaikoura

Video of a New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) convoy manoeuvring through the broken roads near Kaikōura show just how much damaged was sustained from the earthquakes.

The NZDF trucks carrying the supplies have likened the rocky roads to a warzone.

Supplies have begun flowing into Kaikōura following an aftershock on Tuesday which again closed the Inland Road route into the town.

The aftershock caused renewed concern for the road's stability, with the decision to close it stopping a military convoy getting through.

NZDF Staff Sergeant Dan Rosewarne says the damage to the roads was very obvious.

"The damage caused by the earthquake is very evident. Fault lines have sheared the road in half in many places. There are a lot of overhanging rocks. A number of bridges have also been damaged and cannot be used for heavy vehicles, so we had to find alternate routes," he says.

"Aid supplies for Kaikōura are prioritised over provisions for military personnel and are placed at the front of the convoy.

"That way, if we are cut off because of a landslide, the supplies for the affected communities would have gone ahead."

At least four trucks dropped supplies at the local supermarket, another four dropped supplies to Farmlands and four more dropped supplies at the Civil Defence base.

Local resident Shane Smedley says the fuel supplies are much needed.

"I just asked for however much I could get - I've been given 20 litres," he says.

"We live 10 kilometres out rural, we drive in each day to get to work.

"It'll get us going for another few day, we're trying to conserve our fuel as much as we can."
