A new poll shows New Zealanders' support for a republic growing, with most Kiwis saying they want to ditch the monarchy.

The poll, commissioned by NZ Republic, surveyed more than 1000 people over 18.

A large majority, 59 percent, said they were in favour of a New Zealand Head of State, while just 34 percent said stay with the Queen.

The same poll just over two years ago showed just 44 percent wanted to do away with the Queen as New Zealand's Head of State.

The flag debate, Prince Charles' visit, Brexit and the Queen's 90th jubilee have all helped put the focus on the issue and contributed to a shift in public opinion, Monarchy New Zealand's Dr Sean Palmer told The New Zealand Herald.

"They lump them together and declare a great victory," he said.

The poll was taken last month and had 1006 voting-age participants.

Asked "What is your preference for New Zealand's next Head of State", Kiwis responded:
