A 39-year-old man is in a critical condition in Waikato Hospital after being hit by a logging truck in Tauranga this morning.
The man was walking on State Highway 2 at around 4:45am when the truck struck him. He was initially taken to Tauranga Hospital, and transferred to Waikato Hospital by helicopter at around 10am.
Local news site SunLive reports police are still trying to establish why the man was walking on the highway.
"The truck was an unladen double-stack logging truck that had been travelling toward Tauranga from Mount Maunganui when the pedestrian was struck," Senior Sergeant Trinity Milham says.
"It is very early on in our investigation and officers are trying to establish why the man was on the expressway in the first place."
