Three helicopters have managed to contain a large grass fire burning on private land in Hawke's Bay.

Located near Te Aute in between Havelock North and Waipawa, witneses say the blaze spread over five hectares of grass.

Jeremy Matthews watched the flames from a nearby road.

“It seems to be under control but it’s just spread over a ridge and the chopper’s monsoon bucket is going behind the ridge now.”

Fire Communications Spokesperson Craig Dally says no houses or livestock were at risk.

“It’s on the State Highway 2, Te Aute area. We’ve had five appliances in attendance. The fire’s now been virtually extinguished.”

The Hastings District Council has had a total fire ban in place in the region since December.
