Three injured in Karangahake Gorge crash

Three people are in a serious condition after a second major crash in the Hauraki District.

Two cars were involved in a head-on collision in the Karangahake Gorge just before 2pm.

Firefighters had to cut some of the victims from the wreckage.

Two patients were airlifted to Waikato Hospital by the Auckland and Waikato Westpac helicopters.

A 17-year-old woman was airlifted to Tauranga Hospital in critical condition.

The road has been closed and a diversion is in place along Kopu Hikuae Rd from Thames or State Highway 29 Kaimai to access the Bay of Plenty.

Earlier today, a three-car collision near Karangahake Gorge saw another three people hospitalised in a serious condition.
