Police have "no specific concerns" about the safety of a young girl and her brother missing from the Tuakau area.

Fifteen-year-old Te Morehu McLean and seven-year-old Anahera McLean left their caregiver's Potter Rd address on foot with a large suitcase at 10pm on Monday and haven't been seen since.

Police have concerns for the safety of the pair and are asking those in the Tuakau area to check their buildings and sheds.

Inspector Kay Lane says police have searching the wider area and have spoken to neighbouring property owners. A helicopter has also been used in the search.

"While the pair left on foot, we are looking into the possibility they may have been picked up in a vehicle by someone known to them," Insp Lane.

"We believe they may be heading north towards Auckland where they have extended family and would like to hear from anyone who has information about their whereabouts that may help us find them."

Because of their young ages, Insp Lane said she didn't want to divulge why they were in the caregiver's care.

She said the pair had a "strong relationship".

"Our concern is that she's seven, being a very young age, but realistically she's with her older brother and he's very protective of her."

Insp Lane said it didn't appear there was any kind of dispute before they left the house, and it appeared like they'd "left of their own volition".

Te Morehu is Maori, 1.7m tall with a solid build and short dark hair. He was last seen in Nike shoes, light-brown pants and a Kathmandu puffer jacket.

Anahera has a small build and is of average height. She was wearing a "Frozen-style" onesie.

Police say it is likely to pair will be in the greater Auckland or Waikato areas.

Anyone with information on where the pair could be is instructed to call Counties Manukau police on (09) 261 1300.
