Two people dressed as clowns have been arrested in Dunedin after being spotted reportedly holding weapons.

The pair of clowns confronted another group in the Duke St and Dundas St area at around 10:30pm on Sunday.

One man was wearing red-and-white checked pants with a multi-coloured jacket.

Police were unable to confirm reports the two people were holding weapons.

This comes amid a global "creepy clown craze" which sociologist Robert Bartholomew told Newshub is set to stick around for another couple of weeks.

"The clown scare is not over, it's going to continue now for about three more weeks. It's going to peak around Halloween time and then it's going to suddenly decline and go the way of Pokemon Go and Flappy Bird and it's just going to plummet."

This is the second serious incident to be reported in New Zealand. Earlier this month a 22-year-old woman was assaulted by two men dressed as clowns in Hamilton.

In Sweden a man dressed as a clown was arrested for stabbing a 19-year-old, while an Australian teenager was arrested after scaring a group of girls.
