Two imposing cruise ships have docked in Wellington Harbour bringing with them around 6000 tourists for the day.

Royal Caribbean's two largest locally based ships Celebrity Solstice and Voyager of the Seas are in the capital and those on it are estimated to spend around $700,000 in the city.

It is estimated each passenger will spend $120 each with local businesses and tourism operators.

Zealandia alone has had 500 people pre-booking tours at the wildlife sanctuary.

The current 2015/2016 cruise season is estimated to contribute $543.3 million to the New Zealand economy – a nearly 25 percent increase on the previous season.
