Newly-released drone footage reveals the extent of earthquake damage along a key hilltop road between Christchurch and Lyttelton.

The five-minute clip shows stretches of Sumner Rd littered with enormous boulders, landslides, deep cracks and overgrown pavement.

There are plans to repair the 2.6km stretch, which has been closed since the 2011 earthquake, due to the danger of ongoing rockfall.

A joint contingent from the New Zealand Transport Agency, Christchurch City Council and CERA recently approved a scope of works for the restoration.

Plans involve removing unsafe rock above the road and reshaping land in the area.

Current predictions are for the stretch to reopen in late 2017 or early 2018.
