Broadcasting legend Sir Paul Holmes’ body has begun the journey from his Hawke’s Bay home to Auckland where he will be farewelled on Friday.

Sir Paul, 62, passed away last week after a long battle with prostate cancer and ongoing heart problems.

As Sir Paul’s casket left the property this morning, friends and family lined the driveway and a haka was performed by local Maori.

A convoy of five cars will arrive in Auckland today and friends and family will have two days to pay their respects at a private viewing.

Before the convoy, his widow, Deborah, Lady Holmes, his children Rueben and Millie and his brother Ken thanked everyone for their support.

“Leaving today is the end of four days of having Paul here at home with us, and it has been a great process for us and our grieving. We are holding up very well.

“We would just like to say thanks as a family to the public of New Zealand,” says Ken Holmes.

A public farewell will be held at the Holy Trinity Cathedral on Friday.
