VIDEO: Wellington bar uses CCTV to deter drunks

A Wellington bar has come up with a novel way to deter drunken passersby from urinating on their front door.

Cult beer bar Hashigo Zake has uploaded CCTV footage from the weekend to YouTube showing a drunken man relieving himself on their front entrance.

The man eyes the spot for a quick pee, despite a sign warning him that his antics would end up online if he proceeded to do so.

Bar owner Dominic Kelly says he’s hopeful to find the culprit.

“We haven’t found him yet and we’ve only have 50 views so it’s early days,” he says.

The video will be removed only when the man hands himself in and cleans up the mess he left.

Mr Kelly’s ‘frame and shame’ technique has been used in the past to find thieves who have stolen things from the front of the bar and it’s had a 100 percent success rate.

“We’ve put them up three or four times in the past to find stolen goods and they have worked.”

The unidentified public pee-er left his mark on the building just before 2am and when Mr Kelly came to work on Sunday, he could smell it.

“There are a few tell-tale signs. I don’t really want to go into it that much.”

He says doesn’t usually involve the police because the system works pretty well.

And if the video doesn’t get the culprit, Mr Kelly says they’ll have to go a step further.

“We might just have to buy gates to put right across the doorway, that’s the next step.”

If you are the man in the video or want to dob them in, call Hashigo Zake on (04) 3847300.
