Warbirds roar over Wellington

Three vintage warplanes roared in formation over the capital this afternoon, giving Wellingtonians a taste of what they could experience over the Rimutakas this weekend.

An impressive de Havilland Mosquito fighter-bomber was flanked by a Spitfire on one side and a Kitty Hawk on the other, as they zoomed overhead.

They flew into the city over the Hutt Valley and banked east over Wellington Airport.

After another city fly-over, where they moved out of formation, they banked north and headed back to the Wings over Wairarapa air show.

The three planes will feature at the annual event which runs from today until Sunday at the Hood Aerodrome in Masterton.

The Mosquito, nicknamed ‘the wooden wonder’ because it is made nearly entirely of wood, was used by the British in the Second World War.
