Fire crews are making steady progress as they continue to battle a blaze at Westland High School in Hokitika on the West Coast.

Two fire crews responded to the call around 12:50pm. A total of seven crews are at the school as well as a helicopter with a monsoon bucket.

The fire is on the second story of the administration building and in the roof of the hall. Firefighters are currently working to bring the flames under control in the roof but believe they've stopped the fire from spreading further, a fire spokesperson says.

He says the crews are making steady progress with the help from the helicopter.

One of the fireman who had been feeling unwell was taken to hospital as a precaution but has since been released.
