White Island Tours back after fire scare

Whakatane's White Island Tours was up and running again today, less than two days after one of its boats caught fire with 60 people onboard.

The close call hasn't stopped people from wanting to take the trip.

It was all hands on deck for White Island Tours today albeit one boat down, that’s after the company's 75ft vessel Pee Jay V went up in flames during a tour on Monday.

Marketing manager Patrick O'Sullivan says despite being off the water yesterday, it was nice to be back out there today.

"It's a great day for us to be back out on the water. While we weren't officially stopped from going anywhere, we chose to not operate yesterday ourselves, and today we're good to go."

All 53-passengers on the burning boat survived thanks to the seven quick-thinking crew members. Those crew members have been receiving a lot of praise, according to Mr O'Sullivan.

"We've had a lot of emails from passengers on-board thanking us and in particular, thanking our crew members for their actions on the day," he says.

The incident hasn't deterred tourists either, with two tours going ahead today as scheduled.

Two separate investigations are underway to find out how the fire started, but they could take years.

That, of course, means answers could be a long time coming.
