A little-known piece of World War I history has been gifted to the Maritime Museum.

The Nautilus is a 99-year-old launch that was used to save hundreds of New Zealand soldiers’ lives when it served off the coast of Gallipoli.

It was restored by retired Christchurch businessman and former German Consul General Allan Williams, who is gifting the launch to Voyager New Zealand Maritime Museum.

The Nautilus will join the museum’s vintage fleet moored in the museum’s marina at Hobson Wharf and will be the museum’s only working launch.
