Helen Clark returns to Parliament

Monday 5 Mar 2012 5:18 p.m.

By Tova O’Brien

Every Monday the Prime Minister walks into the Beehive theatrette for a weekly press conference.

For nine years Helen Clark did the same, making it an interesting choice of venue for her presentation this evening. She says she chose it because she wanted to hold an event at Parliament.

Ms Clark is back in New Zealand with to her role at United Nations Development Programme and is holding a series of presentation on AIDS and HIV.

She says she does not miss the job which had her on the podium, saying being Leader of the Opposition is one of the toughest roles there is and you have to be willing to suffer.

As for new Labour leader David Shearer, Ms Clark says he would have had to look deep in to his heart.

“Is this what you really want to do? Are you going to walk over burning coals to get there?”

Ms Clark is three years into a four-year term with the United Nations, holding the third most powerful job in the organisation.

“I love what I'm doing, I find it extremely rewarding,’ she says.

So much so, she plans to renew her bid for the job next year.
